Loic Sanlaville Trio
Original Music, Contemporary Jazz beyond boundaries
Loïc Sanlaville Trio is far more than a jazz band. It is the journey of a musician searching for new horizons — exploring a territory without the restrictions of style or genre. A quest to discover who I am through music.
The music becomes a character in itself: fragile, sometimes naive, emotional, unpredictable, and full of life and energy.
Formed in 2010 during Loïc’s jazz studies at a French conservatory, the trio has been nourished by every musician who has taken part in the project and brought their own voice to the music.
When Loïc settled in India, he carried the project with him, where it found new energy through collaborations with passionate Indian musicians and their rich musical traditions. He also began exploring and rearranging Indian classical material, including ragas such as Jhin Jhoti, bringing them into the language of the trio.
The compositions gradually moved beyond the boundaries of jazz, with sound and interaction at the centre of the project. Each piece sketches a landscape rather than a destination : enough direction to suggest a path, enough space to leave it. The music moves between written material and improvisation, creating room for instinct, contradiction and surprise.
The trio is built on three musicians listening closely to one another, creating energy and depth through their interaction. Every performance becomes a conversation — not only between the musicians, but with the audience.
Loic Sanlaville is a musician, composer, teacher and sound engineer born in France but considers India to be his spiritual home. A backpacking trip to India in the 2000s, further altered the course of his personal and musical journey. Since then, he has lives in Bombay and Delhi and actively participate to the music scene.
Divij Kapoor comes to the upright bass from a broad musical background, having explored guitar, vocal, keyboards, production and different musical styles. His approach is curious and instinctive, with a particular attention to colour and space. In the trio, he can anchor a piece one moment and open it up the next, following wherever the music decides to go.
Aditya Dutta (Drums) brings a deep sense of rhythm, sensitivity and openness to the trio. Rooted in jazz but drawing from a wide range of musical traditions, his playing is driven by listening and interaction — responding to the moment and helping shape the music as it unfolds.
Over the past decade, Loïc’s trio has taken his music across India, performing at venues such as The Piano Man Jazz Club and the International Jazz Festival at Shisha Café, and for Alliance Française in Delhi, Gurgaon, Kolkata and Pune. From Bombay to the North East, the trio has continued to develop its sound through performances, encounters and collaborations.
The audience is not only made of jazz fans, but of music lovers. Because when music speaks beyond style, it can reach everyone — through sound, rhythm, energy and emotion. You don't need to understand the language to feel the conversation. The music creates a space where musicians and audience can meet, listen and share the moment.
